Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

How is The Sing! Hymnal an improvement to other hymnals?
As worship practices evolve, many Christians have forgotten the great hymns and liturgical style that have shaped the faith. The Sing! Hymnal seeks to revive this tradition by presenting a fresh curation of classic and contemporary hymns in an updated engraving (typesetting and design). Joining modern hymnody with traditional songs, liturgical elements, and stories about each hymn, this hymnal is invaluable for both corporate and personal worship today.
What standards were used to determine which hymns would be included?
The creators of The Sing! Hymnal believe that hymnals should include music that spans across church history, speaking to all aspects of life. Every hymn included, from classic to contemporary, has been carefully chosen to fulfill this vision, with a strong emphasis on theological truth, lyrical beauty, and musical excellence.
Are the hymns contemporary or traditional?
The Sing! Hymnal features a wide selection of classic hymns of the faith. It includes traditional hymns alongside a range of modern hymns from well-known artists including the Gettys, Sovereign Grace Music, and CityAlight.
Who created The Sing! Hymnal?
Each hymn in this collection has been carefully chosen by Keith and Kristyn Getty and a team of pastors, theologians, and musicians. Keith and Kristyn are award-winning hymn writers of popular songs, including "In Christ Alone" and "Christ Our Hope in Life and Death," and the founders of Getty Music, a global organization dedicated to developing and stewarding modern and traditional hymns. The hymnal is published in partnership with Crossway.
How are the hymns organized?

Each hymn is organized into one of three main sections:

"The Worship Service"—Follows the arc of the gospel, featuring essential elements of worship such as the Call to Worship, Adoration, Confession, Prayer, and Communion

"The Christian Life"—Equips believers for faithful living, including psalms paired with popular hymns and songs designed for children

"The Life of Christ"—Offers hymns for special services and seasons throughout the year

Are hymns related to holidays grouped together?
Yes. The third and final section of the hymnal, "The Life of Christ," features hymns for special services throughout the year, starting with Advent and following through to The Return of Christ. This section contains hymns for every major Christian holiday.
Will the theological approach to the content fit with my church's denomination/beliefs?
The content in The Sing! Hymnal is not overtly tied to a specific denomination and should be appropriate for anyone who loves Scripture and longs to deepen worship and unity through song.
Is the hymnal designed to be used with a specific Bible translation?
While the hymnal can be used in conjunction with any Bible translation, the Scripture readings and psalms paired with hymn melodies feature text from the English Standard Version.
Are there bulk discounts available for my church or ministry?
Yes. Please sign in to crossway.org with your Crossway+ account to see the latest specials and offers.
Is the hymnal available digitally?
Yes, a growing library of sheet music is available as downloadable PDFs at SingHymnal.com.
