About this Hymn
Joseph H. Gilmore was teaching as a guest at First Baptist Church, Philadelphia, during the Civil War and was examining Psalm 23 when he came to a simple conclusion: "The fact of God's leadership is the one significant fact in human experience—that it makes no difference how we are led, or whither we are led, so long as we are sure that God is leading us."
Lyrics
Verse 1
He leadeth me: oh, blessed thought! Oh, words with heav'nly comfort fraught! Whate'er I do, wheree'er I be, still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me.
Chorus
He leadeth me, he leadeth me; by his own hand he leadeth me. His faithful foll'wer I would be, for by his hand he leadeth me.
Verse 2
Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine, nor ever murmur nor repine, content, whatever lot I see, since 'tis my God that leadeth me.
Verse 3
And when at last my race is run, the Savior's work in me is done, e'en death's cold wave I will not flee, since God through Jordan leadeth me.
Verse 2

Verse 3
And when at last my race is run, the Savior's work in me is done, e'en death's cold wave I will not flee, since God through Jordan leadeth me.
