Today John Milton is known as a classic English poet, but this paraphrase of Psalm 136 was written when he was just getting started—at age fifteen! Four hundred years later, his poetic interpretation still helps worshipers around the globe to voice this psalm of praise and remembrance.

Verse 1
Let us, with a gladsome mind, praise the Lord, for he is kind;

Chorus
for his mercies shall endure, ever faithful, ever sure.

Verse 2
Let us blaze his name abroad, for of gods he is the God;

Verse 3
He, with all-commanding might, filled the new-made world with light;

Verse 4
He the golden-tressed sun caused all day his course to run;

Verse 5
All things living he doth feed; his full hand supplies their need;

Verse 6
Let us, with a gladsome mind, praise the Lord, for he is kind;
