About this Hymn
This is a more intricate setting of the Magnificat (the other, more accessible congregational version in this hymnal is "Tell Out, My Soul, the Greatness of the Lord"). The Magnificat is one of the most extraordinary songs in all of history. Recorded in Luke 1, it mirrors the Song of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2, displaying the profound faith of the virgin Mary, who would have been a young teenage girl at the time. It also highlights how deeply Mary knew the Scriptures, allowing her to respond in such a biblically rich way to the most shocking of news.
Lyrics
Verse 1
My soul will magnify the Lord; I rejoice in God my Savior, in the wonder of his favor. For he has done great things for me; he was mindful of his servant. Ev'ry age shall call me blessed. The Hope of Abraham come in the giving of a Son; for he who promised is mighty in remembering his mercy.
Verse 2
My soul will magnify the Lord for his grace to those who fear him through ev'ry generation. The proud he scatters to the wind as the ruler's strength is broken, and the rich are left with nothing. The humble lifted high, and the hungry satisfied; our portion and our treasure, our hope and help forever.
