About this Hymn
One of the great Christian anthems, this hymn is both a call to worship and a rallying cry to the mission field. The lyrics were written by Edward Perronet, a missionary to India. E. P. Scott, a missionary to a primitive Indian tribe, once reported how the robust singing of the song disarmed angry tribesmen, who initially greeted him with spears drawn, but then relented at the singing of the verse that mentions "every kindred, every tribe." We have opened many missions conferences with this hymn. "At the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Phil. 2:10–11).
Lyrics
Verse 1
All hail the pow'r of Jesus' name! Let angels prostrate fall; bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all! Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him Lord of all!
Verse 2
Ye chosen seed of Israel's race, ye ransomed from the fall, hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all! Hail him who saves you by his grace, and crown him Lord of all!
Verse 3
Let ev'ry kindred, ev'ry tribe on this terrestrial ball, to him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all! To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him Lord of all!
Verse 4
Oh, that with yonder sacred throng we at his feet may fall! We'll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all! We'll join the everlasting song, and crown him Lord of all!
